MIAMI — With the crowning of a new World Heavyweight Champion, the Jan. 8, 2013, episode of SmackDown cemented its place in blue brand history just one week before its landmark 700th episode.

On the same night The Rock made his eagerly anticipated return to Friday night’s best show, Alberto Del Rio seized the spotlight and defeated Big Show in a Last Man Standing Match to claim the World Heavyweight Championship.

The Mexican Aristocrat heroically battled The World’s Largest Athlete in an absolutely brutal showdown, literally taking The World’s Largest Athlete to his limit en route to an historic victory.

Del Rio’s title triumph stands as his first World Heavyweight Championship and his third World Title overall. His victory also shows, once again, that anything can happen on SmackDown at any time!

Wow , obviously I've not seen he show yet , but I'll be definitley watching to see this match . Got to wonder where his leads to at WM , as everyone was expecting Sheamus v Orton for the title . Guess that might change now . Unless Del Rio loses it before then .

Can't say I'm over the moon . Show was starting to really get over we me as a champ. He was the unstoppable giant . A few weeks back Del Rio turned heel to feud with 3MB and to team with the Brooklyn Brawler . Now he's World Heavyweight champ ???? I'm not convinced .

On a positive note , it seems like Smack Down and Raw are really starting to turn up the heat and we are seeing some great entertainment . Should see the ratings go back up again .

What I want to know is when was it announced that it would be a title match on Smackdown and why couldn't this have been saved for a PPV instead of a spoiler was Big Show hurt or something.

I agree this comes further out of left field than anything to date. If this is to cover for Show some way why? Ziggler was the viable smart option incase that happened. I think this is to make it believable when Ziggler takes the title.

Probably because WWE have the mentality is that a heel can't cash in on a heel infact as far as I can I remember only Jack Swagger has cashed in on a fellow heel.
