Default Paul Roma Compares CM Punk to Honky Tonk Man

    Source: WrestlingNewsSource.com

    ClubWWI.com

CM Punk's look: "He looks like somebody who was dragged out of the tattoo parlor - kicks his feet up and is just chain-smoking cigarettes. Not somebody that you want your son to look like.

"But, at the end of the day, you have to look at him and look at Honky Tonk Man. Honky Tonk was a guy who had no body, but had a great gimmick and people wanted to see him get beat. So when he went out there and beat all these ex-champions and champions-to-be like Tito Santana, people were saying, 'How can that be? How can he beating Tito? How can he be beating this guy? How can he be beating that guy?' And that's what had you coming back. Again, it's like Mike Tyson. You don't have to like him, but you're going to watch to see him get beat. If you do like him, you're gonna watch to see him not get beat.

"And that's the same thing with CM Punk. You said it. He doesn't have a physique. He' s just that less-than-average guy as far as physically looking at him and he goes out there and wins, wins, wins. And it drives the average Joe out in the audience, that looks like him, to say, 'Oh, I can do that, man. CM Punk is doing it and he looks like s--t. I can do it.' The other people out there, who are jacked and in better shape physically, are saying, 'When's this guy gonna get beat?' That's the philosophy that Vince is using with this dude."

Punk is the anti Roma. No look but talented.

Not a shot to Roma, but he was never anything special.

Why do we keep getting these kind of interviews from people like Roma? Sure he was IN the business, but does that make him someone whose opinion I should value? Cuz I really don't.
If you don't got it, get it! If you don't get it............figure it out!

Roma didn't have the best career, but he spent 15 years in the profession in the same locker rooms of some of the best minds in wrestling. Roma knows what he's talking about.

I see where Roma is coming from... and 'the guy from the tattoo parlour' look that he says CM Punk has is a good analogy.
I've said on here before that Punk looks like an average guy who probably works out a little bit .... but he doesnt look like a traditional wrestler.
I think that Roma is right... normal guys can connect with Punk... if a guy who doen't look like a wrestler can become a wrestling star.... it give sthem a feeling of....we could do that too!

Bret Hart said to be a great wrestler you need to be able to have a good look, be able to talk and be able to wrestle.

Even guys who billed as being ligher than him in weight... say Dolph Ziggler or Zack Ryder... actually have wrestler physiques.
Punks ability to talk is the reason why hes become a star.

Coming from a musical background, even musos in a band are expected to look a certain part. Bass players are either tall and masculine, drummers should have a certain dangerous studly look, keyboards nerdy or female, guitarists are the right hand man/girl to the front man who should is the key figure in that group. It's part of the entertainment. CM Punk looks like a dump that Bam Bam Bigelow took.

At times, I feel like that would be a compliment for Punk. The guy is an ass but lets face it, Punk has it all with the exception of a physique. However, if you look at the words 'wrestling' and 'entertainment,' then while he has them both, why shouldn't he get respect from his peers or older wrestlers. Punk is a fantastic wrestler and a fantastic entertainer. The stuff he comes up with his brilliant at times. It gets a little troubling at times for fans and former pros to want to see big muscular guys wrestle all the time. I fail to see how that would be a great idea nowadays.

Punk could bulk up a little but with his haircut and tattoos and the way he stands since going heel I think he's looked like a UFC fighter. Should he bulk up? Yeah but he still looks tough enough as he is to say lines like "I'll kick your ass" to the Rock and it feel believable. Maybe anyone could batter outside the ring, but the way he carry's himself makes you think he could be a legit badass. That takes more talent than putting on muscle if you ask me.

Coming out of someone's ass may be a compliment to you, but not to many others.

It's amazing the jealousy that other athletes have towards Punk. In my opinion he will go down as one of the greatest mike men of all time and he also happens to have great wrestling skill. Who cares about his physique ? Do u think Mick Foley ever had an admirable wrestling physique? No . Did any body care ? No .

Not so long ago we had Billy Graham bitching about Punk , now Roma's got to put a word in . Does any body really care what Paul Roma thinks ? The guys one of the all time greatest underacheivers and the highlight of his career was when Paul Orndorff carried him to tag team success. Did he ever carry a major title for over 400 days ? Absolutely not .

    Jealousy ! Total jealousy !

At the end of the day CM Punk has the attention of everyone. He's busted his butt just like everyone else. Nothing was handed to him that he didn't have pulled away from him 10 times before.

The physique argument is so played out. Instead of going into a long tirade, I will just condense what I always say...MMA, Hollywood, pretty much anything that requires one to be marketable doesn't give two sh*ts about the "physique" of its players. The only reason that was ever different in wrestling was because of Vince McMahon who happened to like big guys...so he pushed big guys and now we've been conditioned to believe that bodybuilders are the end all be all of wrestling. Some of the greatest wrestlers ever looked like normal guys outside of the WWFE "Universe." A wrestler should be pushed based on his ability in action and on the mic. If we wanted to watch oily guys pose and flex their big muscles we would be watching a bodybuilding competition instead.

The general feeling among casual fans of old fans (at least the ones I talk talk too off the internet and who aren't influenced) is that how someone so small in physique can be taken so seriously. Roma does have a point (inspite of his bitterness) that fans do live vicariously through Punk.

Bret could wrestle, and had the looks. 2 points.
CM Punk can wrestle, can talk. 2 points. Plus he's not a cry baby in real life like Bret is. That makes Punk better than Bret Hart. Not to mention that Bret never held a World title for 420+ days.

Bret wrestled and was a member of the 'whose who of wrestling' era. CM Punk is just filling time before wrestling becomes popular again and find it's real star.

I guess I'm trying to see where Roma really said anything that bad? I don't see it said anywhere that he wasn't deserving of what he's achieved. Does anybody here not agree that he doesn't have the typical build of a World Champion? I'm not praying that my son grows up and looks like just like CM Punk.

CM Punk couldn't lace Brets boots.
Look I think Punk is one of the more entertaining guys in the current era.... but Bret is a shoe-in for Top 10 all time lists.
    There is no comparison.

I think you misread that or interpreted it your own way. Either way that sounded pretty bad.

So I just read these comments in FULL . Besides mentioning Punk and talking about him as if he is a nobody , Roma also discusses his time with the Four Horseman .

What did he say about it ? It's no big effing deal because it's not real . Wow . What a guy . Nice to see he has passion for the business ......NOT. If that's how he felt about been in the greatest faction ever , imagine how he felt when he teamed with Hercules. If you ask me , this guy has no respect and saying something like that is like taking a dump on evrything he ever did. It's nuts .

How dare a guy with an attitude like this compare CM Punk to a tatooed , chain smoking bum when he himself has no regard for the years he HIMSELF put in as a wrestler .

In fact , have a click on the following link .
Read what Roma has to say about Hogan , Vince and others .
Tell me he is not the most bitter wrestler in history .......ever .

The guy is a total bitter loser .
