Default WWE Video Games: Take Two

    Source: http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/01/...ed-by-take-two

The era of THQ wrestling games is over. Sources have indicated to IGN that the WWE game franchise will be sold to Take Two, parent company of 2K. Terms of the sale are unknown at this time, as details have not been finalized. These negotiations appear to have taken place outside THQ's formal auction process.

This news comes as THQ assets have been divided among several different publishers, pending court approval.

For more on WWE games, and THQ's future, stay tuned to IGN - official announcements are expected as soon as tomorrow.

I haven't played UFC but I played Def Jam by EA and it was basically a rip off of THQ's No Mercy. Sure they upgraded the graphics and gave it a rap/ghetto theme but in terms of game play it was a clunkier version of No Mercy.

THQ were doing awesome things with WWE games, WWE 12 was the most fun wrestling game since No Mercy. I have WWE 13, I haven't played it yet because I'm still enjoying my story lines on WWE 12 Universe. From what I can tell WWE 13 did the impossible and made WWE 12 better.

With that said though maybe this is a good thing, because THQ would of had real trouble topping WWE 13, so perhaps a fresh perspective will keep things going strong. And if not... well I'll probably still have plenty of mileage with WWE 13 by the time they release their first game anyway.

The real question is will Take Two keep Yukes as they've already stated they had started on '14.

If they don't that means they'll have to start over and build a new engine from scratch

i wouldn't be surprised if they let Yuke's finish WWE '14, while at the same time have their own guys build a new engine for later games.

i welcome 2K Sports taking over the WWE license, they seem to have a good track record with sports games, and aren't penny-pinching jerks like EA. and since 2K will almost definitely have an in-house developer post WWE '14, bugs & glitches might have a chance of getting fixed within a reasonable time of them being reported, cause i'll be honest, the way THQ has handled the bugs situation with WWE '13 is what put me off buying it for ages.

also, Fun Fact: 2K release their sports games on Steam, so there might a chance of a current-gen WWE game being released for PC. (no, Wrestlefest doesn't count)

Hm, I never imagined Def Jam like WWF No Mercy. Reading that post does get me to realize it now though. On that subject, can anyone tell me if Def Jam Icon is worth playing at all? Anyway, i'm curious to see how they do with the WWE games now. The last several games were really good. I know they're lame now, but, games like World Tour and No Mercy are still fun to play to this day. I agree with the poster that said, "it's good they don't have them now. It's going to be hard to top WWE 12." Any game they do now will probably not be as good, so, it's going to be interesting to see if another company can do better.

I'm with Game, 2K will most likely allow Yukes to release WWE 14 and then start their own game. I think that's pretty interesting because before this I was going to suggest somewhere that THQ set up a second development team for WWE games. Why? Well look at the bugs in WWE 13, they had loads of great ideas but not enough time (and probably money) to release the game at it's full potential. So why not set up two different teams, they continue to release one WWE game a year but each year it's by a different team. The two teams compete, trying to top the other each year and because they don't have to produce something every year they have time to put more into it. It would be interesting if 2K kept Yukes and also set up it's own team. Like I said, WWE 13 will be hard to top, they're already doing stuff that was in our wildest dreams a few years ago. But if you had two teams bringing out the best in each other and focusing on different areas of gameplay, then you could get more range as it wouldn't be an updated version of the previous years game every time and they can avoid hitting that quality wall every year.

Also, if THQ are gone what's going to happen to Saints Row? On the one hand Saints Row was a good series, on the other hand The Third was a nice stopping point. I hope Saints Row gets picked up and is either rebooted or the basic aidea and engine are used for something similar, like a spin off game or something.

I think they already were wanting to do a Saints Row 4. I am curious what else they would do with it. Saints Row 3 would be s good stopping point, but, I am curious what else the Saints could do.

Here's a list of what's going to THQ's other franchises thus far

SEGA has agreed to purchase Relic, developer of Company of Heroes 2 and Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War.

Koch Media (owner of Dead Island publisher Deep Silver) has agreed to purchase Saints Row developer Volition as well as the publishing rights to the Metro franchise. (Update: According to a statement issued by Koch, "Deep Silver, Koch Media’s international publishing powerhouse, will lead all further development and marketing on the Saints Row and Metro franchises." The statement added that "Koch Media and Deep Silver will roll out future plans for each franchise in the coming months.")

Crytek, who is currently developing Homefront 2, has purchased the rights to the Homefront franchise. (Update: Crytek has confirmed the purchase, noting that "Development work will continue on Homefront 2 at Crytek’s UK studio in Nottingham.")

Take-Two (parent company of 2K and Rockstar) has agreed to purchase Turtle Rock Studios’ project codenamed Evolve. (Update: While Take Two was initially rumored to have acquired Darksiders publisher Vigil, it has since been revealed that this isn't the case)

Ubisoft has purchased the rights to publish South Park: The Stick of Truth as well as THQ Montreal, the current developer of Assassin’s Creed creator Patrice Desilets’ project codenamed 1666. (Update: Ubisoft has confirmed the purchase, noting in a statement that "THQ Montreal will join Ubisoft’s development teams." Ubisoft also says that South Park: The Stick of Truth "is scheduled for release in calendar 2013.")
