Default Bret Hart: "Triple H Isn't Great. He Hasn't Had A Great Match" (VIDEO)

    Source: WrestlingNewsSource.com

    @WrestleTalk_TV Interview

Bret Hart joined WrestleTalk TV for an interview on the UK program.

They recently revealed an outtake from Bret Hart who commented on Triple H.

"How great really is Triple H? I mean I can look at CM Punk and Rey Mysterio who have had really unique moves and they do things that are innovative. Then I look at someone like Triple H and when I look at him, he has always at a good look but what has he really done? What has he created that no one else has?

"Great? I don't think so and if he is running the show, how can guys who run the show never do something great? I don't think he has had a great match. Whenever I look at HHH's matches, I want to see him do something to think "Yeah, he had greatness in him". I pictured the whole Taker/HHH match and it was exactly like I predicted and it was pretty average."

"I just don't think Triple H is a great wrestler. He's a good one but great? No."

I have to disagree usually I'm anti Triple H but regardless of how long he's been in the buisness he's had more great matches then CM Punk or Rey Mysterio have had combined (maybe that might be stretching it a bit but that's how I see it)

And this is in the WWE ring not Ring of Spot monkey honour or TNA or Mexico

Well obviously Bret's opinion is kind of tainted by what an ass HHH was to him. Regardless I don't think he is too far off.

Well Darth to discredit what Rey did for the majority of his career would be unfair. He's not HHH who was a nobody until he went to WWE. Rey was a bigger star in Mexico than HHH is the United States and then he had great matches on free TV every night on ECW and WCW. I think even in WWE though Rey has at least double the great matches that HHH had. Rey would have random great matches on Smackdown every week for years.

You could make a much better case for HHH up against Punk than you could Rey though. The big difference there though is how many opportunities HHH has had to have a great match vs. CM Punk. From 1999 and on HHH was always among the top 3 featured guys in the company. Of course he's going to have some great matches here and there...he's working with the best guys and more importantly the matches are being positioned as matches that you must enjoy.

Not trying to take away from what Rey has done in other promotions but WWE wise he has plenty of good matches but only a few great matches.

I could name dozens. Just off the top of my head he's had great matches

    vs. Eddie Guerrero
    vs. Kurt Angle
    vs. Finlay
    vs. John Cena
    vs. CM Punk
    vs. Chavo Guerrero
    vs. John Morrison

    and I could keep going

And of course this is just my opinion, but I feel like I could make a pretty good case for any of these.

Bret has hit the nail on the head here.

Great Wrestlers have proven that they are great by closing Wrestlemania and HHH has proven he isnt great by failing at this.

Darth, can you name a couple of great matches HHH has had? Lets keep in mind that Bret made a clear distinction between good and great...

    Ok

Vs Cactus Jack in a street fight and then Hell In A Cell

vs Rock 60 minute iron man match

vs Rock and Kurt Angle Summerslam 2000

6 man hell in a cell match

vs Undertaker Normal match, No Hold's barred and Hell in a Cell (WM matches only)

    vs Kane Biker Chain match

vs Shawn Micheals 3 stages of hell and Last man standing

vs Chris Benoit and Shawn Micheals WM only match not the backlash one that one wasn't as good.

vs Chris Benoit iron man match on raw

vs Batista all their one on one matches

    vs Brock Lesnar

Now keep in mind these are just my opinions and the matches I can remember as well as well

Even though the ring of spot monkey comment alone gives you less footing in your post, you can't honestly name 5 great matches of Triple H's.

Sure he was great at hyping his matches, I enjoy his brutality/mindgames outside the ring (e.g. against Mick Foley, Eugene, Goldust etc)
But when it came down to, it its always predictable in the ring in his matches.

The only memorable moments in his matches are the SPOTS in his Hardcore matches (commentary tables and his sledgehammer) or when something goes wrong (the sickening pedigree to Marty Garner or landing on his groin on the turnbuckle thanks to Chyna).
He's never made me go "wow", and I've seen a stupid amount of his matches thanks to my cousin.

I agree with Bret Hart, if it wasn't for his physique and his connections he wouldn't be as big as he is.

I can't name a Top 10 or 25 HHH match that didn't involve an opponent who brought more to the table.

I have never had a problem with Triple H's matches and there have been plenty of them that were highly entertaining and in fact riveting . However , as far as in ring ability goes Rey is better. Bret mentioned that Triple H's physique helped him a lot as a comptitor . But I think the main reason he bacame as big a name as he did , let's face it , is because of his thing with Stephanie McMahon . He's Vince's son in law at the end of the day . You have to credit guys like Rey , C.M and , of course Bret himself , for getting where they did without having to sleep with the bosses daughter. All three of them , as far as in the ring ability , forget gimmicks , storylines the lot , are better at what they do than Mr Levesque .

Darth that list just makes it look like HHH needs a gimmick to hide is shortcomings...

Guys that can go out there with no back story and no gimmick, yet entertain the crowd are great wrestlers.

Gary seems like a smart guy, he can see that there is a difference between being great and using the show to make you appear great. Very different

I hate agreeing with the majority but Bret Hart and those who agreed with him are right, Triple H is nothing special. The list of matches that Darth Shizzel posted are almost all gimmick matches. I can't remember a non gimmick match that HHH has had that I would consider great. Everything I remember him doing was from average to good, but nothing so mind blowingly great that it stuck in my mind. His promos were always good, the man is a gifted talker but as far as in ring ability goes he wasn't anything to write home about.

Also the comment about Triple H having more great matches than Mysterio and Punk combined was a joke, right? Mysterio had more great matches while in ECW than Triple H has had his entire career. That isn't even counting his days in Mexico or his time dominating the the WCW Cruiserweight Division or the WWE. That was just one small portion of Mysterio's career. Punk has also had more great matches Triple H.

Rey & CM Punk a respectively world class wrestlers (arguably not world championship wrestlers), and HHH is neither.

As for the Topic on hand, You gotta agree that Bret's opinion has gotta be based on his beef with HHH to some extent but as above stats show, Triple H's most matches were gimmick based and him being married to boss's daughter has helped him A LOT.

True . And you can't blame Bret . Triple H and co terrorised the locker room for years and must have made countless enemies back then . It amazes me that Hunter was punished severly for the curtain call night , been reduced to the lower mid card , more or less , jobber level . Fast forward many many years and he's one of the biggest stars in the business. But again , thanks to sleeping with Stephanie . I'm actually a Triple H fan . I think he's awesome as a heel , but unfortunately not as good in the ring as Bret . The Hitman was a legend and Triple H doesn't come close. However , I would have love to see Triple H v Bret when both were at their prime . In fact I also belive Bret was more effective in the boom of the Attitude Era than Triple H and DX were . People don't realise it but Bret manhandled Vince long before Austin did. He also swore on TV long before Austin did. I believe to this day he was the guy that kick started the Attitude Era more than anyone else. And as a heel , Bret on the mike overcomes Triple H anyday . The great thing, unlike Triple H and co , he's always been a humble guy and represented professionalism in the industry .

This is a brave statement for Bret to make.... well if he wants the WWE appearance checks to keep rolling in!

However I've got to agree with the majority here. Triple H is good... but not great.
I can't think of one particuarly area where he excels.... hes a good all rounder .... the old saying 'Jack of all trades but master of none' definately applies to him.
Hes was a good worker in his late 90s prime (but no Shawn Michaels or Chris Benoit), he can talk competently (but lacks the charisma of a Hogan, Flair or Rock) and he can sell tickets (but no marketing machine like Hogan or Austin).

I agree with everything Bret Hart says about Triple H

Triple H is not only overrated, but his matches never let me say WOW or Oh My Goodness

He will always be known as a Spot-Monkey and a Locker Room Politician

    UPDATE:

Arda Ocal spoke with Bret "Hitman" Hart after his comments about Triple H was published everywhere.

Ocal asks what he makes of these comments gaining a large amount of attention. Hart stands his ground, even goes further with his stance:

    - Gives Triple H vs Undertaker a grade: "I said I'd give (Taker vs HHH at WrestleMania 28) a 4-out-of-10. I think that was generous." and goes on to explain why.

    - "I wouldn't put him in the top 1000 great wrestlers. To me he was very mediocre."

    - Questioning Triple H's originality and contributions to pro wrestling.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bret's not pulling any punches on this one

I would have to sit down and make a list of 1000 great wrestlers before I decide Triple H isn't on it... that's a lot of wrestlers to list. I agree with what Bret is saying though. The match with Taker wasn't amazing by any means and the man hasn't really done anything for pro wrestling.
