Andre has a less impressive record, but definitely was a huge part of the reason. WM got popular in the first place.

Randy's match against Steamboat was way ahead of it's time. His match against Flair was classic in 1992 . Plus there was the retirement match with the Warrior . I don' t think there was ever anybody to carry Hellwig to a match of that standard before. I'm going with Randy.

This is a very very close call. Two if the five biggest stars of the 1980s (and early Wrestlemania period).
I am going to sneak it with Andre. If only because Wrestlemania 3 and Hulk-Andre remains the most famous and iconic moment in sports entertainment history.
Andres WM2 Battle Royal win is also infamous as it involved a mixture of wrestlers and NFL footballers. That was a big part in the wrestling rubbing shoulders with more mainstream areas.
What made the WM3 event such a big deal was the fact that Hulk was facing ANDRE! Fans were watching Hogan beat everybody... but when it came to Andre it suddenly became a much bigger deal. Andre was the biggest star in wrestling during the late 70s/early 80s.... and it was a passing of the torch moment that took Hulkamania to even greater heights.

Savage does have many significant Mania moments of his own... the outstanding IC match with Steamboat, the WM4 title tournement, the career ending match at WM7, carrying Hogan to a very good match at WM5.... but the significance of Mania 3 gives Andre the nod 51% to 49%.
